Microsoft Forms to Replace InfoPath? Microsoft: “No.”
Like many of our customers, we’ve been tracking Microsoft comments regarding the retirement and replacement of InfoPath since the deprecation of InfoPath was announced in early 2014. When the new Microsoft Forms product was announced last year, the blogosphere started wondering: Is this the replacement for InfoPath?
Recently Microsoft announced that Microsoft Forms is now available to Office 365 commercial subscribers. Now Microsoft Forms are no longer limited to education subscribers as they had been in the past. This new move has spurred another round of questioning about InfoPath replacement. SharePoint blogger and Microsoft MVP Marc Anderson tweeted ‘This is going to confuse a lot of people’.
Microsoft has been precise in describing where Microsoft Forms fits into their productivity suite. A Microsoft support FAQ addresses the InfoPath replacement question:
Microsoft Forms appears to compete directly with Google Forms, first and foremost in the education arena. For businesses and enterprises it is probably best understood as an in-house alternative to products like Survey Monkey.
As Office 365 specialist Jeremy Thake blogged:
“It surprises me that this product was not just called Microsoft Surveys, but I guess it indicates how much of a threat they felt Google Forms was. That would have made the differentiation a lot simpler.”
Microsoft has become increasingly clear on the subject of InfoPath replacement. PowerApps and Flow are the successors that Microsoft recommends for some (but not all) InfoPath replacement scenarios.
